The upcoming gubernatorial election in New Jersey will hold a historical value. For the first time in New Jersey history will the person running for governor be able to choose a running mate. The newly created office of Lieytenant Governor was set up first in 2005 after voters ratified the amendment. Most other states have a Lieutenant Governor to assist the current Governor and take over in the case of resignation, impeachment, or death. This is a much needed amendment considering since 2001 the state has hade two of its Governors resign. In the past, if the Governor left office either the President of the Senate or the Assembly would assume the role of Acting Governor as well as continue their present job. This has been a problem in New Jersey's past considering that since 2000 we have had seven individuals lead the state; one of which served two non-consecutive terms as Acting Governor. Current Governor, Democrat Jon Corzine has selected State Senator Loretta Weinberg as his running mate. Republican Chris Christie has selected Monmouth Country Sheriff Kim Guadagno and Independent Chris Daggett has chosen Frank J. Esposito, a Kean University history professor, as their running mates. This election is bound to bring historic value to the state of New Jersey.
