Almost a year after the band’s debut album, Vampire Weekend is due to release their second album, “Contra,” on January 12, 2010.
Made up of Ezra Koenig, Rostam Batmanglij, Chris Tomson and Chris Baio, the band formed in 2006 out of New York City. The group says their musical influence comes from both African pop music and Western classical music, describing their genre as “Upper West Side Soweto,” to guardianco.uk.com.
On their first album, whether you were grooving to “A-Punk” or singing along to the catchy lyrics of “Oxford Comma,” the bands indie, electro-pop mixture left a musical impact of those who gave the weird tracks a try.
To many, the combination of simple lyrics, recognizable keyboard and slinky guitar lines made the album memorable. However, Vampire’s second attempt, “Contra,” manages to incorporate a wider spectrum of instruments. According to Rolling Stone, the music is much “deeper.”
The band has already released the albums single “Cousins.” Much like the previous albums selection, the song is upbeat with the same pop flare.
According to pitchfork.com, “The guitars scratch rough against the ear when they’re not spinning off into skittering time-trail solos. There are no strings. The bass is an irregular heartbeat that pumps extra blood.”
The band’s official website is vampireweekend.com, where they have their newest music video, “Cousins,” as well as updates and blogs.
