“No one has said it yet, I’m full!” said senior Alex Pepperman.
Indeed, many people were full after eating four or five tacos in only a few minutes. The occasion was the Spanish Club’s Taco Eating Contest on Thursday the 9th, in which partners competed to eat eight tacos in the shortest time possible. The freshman team of Matt Pagano and Alex MacDonald won first place and each member received a $10 gift certificate to Jan’s Sweet Shop. Senior J.T. Thompson and junior Anthony Miragliotta took a close second place and both received $5 dollar certificates.
The contestants sat down in the cafeteria and prepared to do battle with each other. A large crowd of spectators watched as the Spanish Club distributed the tacos. The contest quickly sifted out the taco aficionados from the only casual eaters. People struggled to eat the food while the crowd cheered them on.
“I started sticking them in my mouth and I realized that the strategy was not to chew – but to swallow. So I was swallowing massive amounts of un-chewed taco – not pleasant,” said senior Matt Karlin.
After only a few minutes, the freshman team stood up and claimed first place.
“It wasn’t about the prize, man. It was about the glory. I believe I represented my grade to the fullest and I will be back next year,” said Anthony, second place winner.
“Let me just get an intervention here – this man can eat!” said Alex.
The Spanish club raised $120 from entrance fees. It was $3 to compete and $1 to watch and enjoy refreshments.
